Temperature zones
| Zone | Typical range | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Frozen | 0°F (−18°C) or colder | Frozen food, ice cream, seafood |
| Chilled / cooler | about 33–40°F (1–4°C) | Produce, dairy, meat, some medicines |
| Controlled ambient | about 55–75°F (13–24°C) | Chocolate, wine, cosmetics, supplements |
What it costs
Cold storage usually costs more than dry storage because of power, insulation and equipment — often 1.5 to 2.5 times the per-pallet rate (estimate checked 2026-10-25). Extra fees can include blast freezing, temperature logs and minimum monthly charges. See the warehouse cost guide.
What to ask a cold storage warehouse
- Which temperature zones do you run, and how are temperatures monitored and alarmed?
- Are you registered with the FDA (for food) and audited for food safety (for example SQF or BRCGS)?
- What happens in a power failure — do you have backup generators?
- How are lot numbers and expiry dates tracked (first-expired, first-out)?
- What is your liability per pallet if product is lost?

Frequently asked questions
What is blast freezing?
Blast freezing quickly brings fresh product down to frozen temperature with very cold, fast-moving air. Many cold storage warehouses offer it for an extra fee.
Can a cold storage warehouse also ship my orders?
Some do. Many cold storage companies offer pick and pack, cross-dock and reefer trucking. Ask for these services in your quote.
Do pharma products need special storage?
Often yes: controlled temperatures, monitoring and documentation. Ask whether the warehouse follows good distribution practice (GDP) for medicines.
