Is a 3PL right for you?

A third-party logistics (3PL) warehouse stores your stock and ships your orders. It makes sense when packing takes too much of your time, you are running out of space, or you want faster delivery from a second location. You trade some control for flexible costs.

12 questions to ask

  1. What types of products and customers do you handle now? (Ask for clients like you.)
  2. Which platforms do you integrate with — Shopify, Amazon, Walmart, WooCommerce, EDI?
  3. What is the full fee schedule, including receiving, storage, pick and pack, packaging, returns and minimums?
  4. What is the daily order cut-off time for same-day shipping?
  5. What is your measured order accuracy, and how are mistakes credited?
  6. Which carriers and shipping rates can I use?
  7. How do I see inventory and orders in real time?
  8. How do you handle peak season (Q4) and inbound container surges?
  9. What insurance covers my goods, and up to what value?
  10. Do you handle special needs — lot tracking, expiry dates, kitting, hazmat, food-grade or cold chain?
  11. What is the contract length and notice period?
  12. How do I get my stock back if I leave, and what does it cost?

Switching 3PLs

Plan a switch away from peak season. Overlap both warehouses for a few weeks, move fast-selling stock first and count inventory on both ends. Estimate costs with the warehouse cost calculator, then browse 3PL & fulfillment companies by state.

Frequently asked questions

How many orders do I need to use a 3PL?

There is no fixed number. Many small-business 3PLs start around a few hundred orders a month; others take smaller brands with a monthly minimum fee.

Should my 3PL be close to me or close to my customers?

Close to your customers usually wins: shorter shipping zones mean lower postage and faster delivery. Being close to you only matters if you visit often.

What is a good order accuracy rate?

Ask the 3PL for its measured accuracy and how errors are credited. Good warehouses track it every month and share it with clients.
