The three options
- Public (shared) warehousing: rent space by the pallet and month in a shared building, pay handling per pallet. No long commitment.
- Contract (dedicated) warehousing: a 3PL runs space, staff and systems just for you under a 1–5 year contract.
- Private warehousing: you lease or own the building and run it yourself.
Side by side
| Public | Contract | Private | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commitment | Month to month | 1–5 years | Lease 3–10 years or own |
| Pricing | Per pallet + handling | Fixed + variable fees | Rent + staff + equipment |
| Control | Low | Medium | Full |
| Best for | Small or seasonal volume | Steady, larger volume | Very large, stable volume |
When to switch
Many businesses start in public warehousing, move to a contract when volume becomes steady and space needs are predictable, and only open a private warehouse when they can fill it year-round. Compare monthly totals with the warehouse cost calculator and find space in the warehouse directory.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 3PL public or contract warehousing?

What is a warehouse receipt?
A document the warehouse gives you for goods it stores, stating what was received and the storage terms. It matters if goods are lost or damaged.
